Summary:

Lieutenant Bak proudly serves under Queen Hatshepsut, however due to a raiding party on a pleasure house frequented by many of the nobility of Egypt, he has been exiled. Specifically to a desolated  city within the Nile Valley – Buhen. His first challenge come in the form of finding the city’s most capable commandant Nakht dead from a dagger to the heart and his wife next to him covered in fresh blood. Is she guilty of murdering her husband? Or is this young widow truly innocent? Lieutenant Bak feels compelled to investigate, however the truth is not always clear in city of Buhen, and death seems to stalk this place devoid of a good water supply and surrounded by harsh desert. Although this book was originally published  as the 7thin the series and is sometimes listed as such, it is in fact a prequel novel, so there is no need to start reading the other books in this series to follow the storyline and connect with the characters.
